Abstract
1403198 Coating colloidal particles BELL & HOWELL CO 7 Sept 1972 [30 Sept 1971] 54527/74 Divided out of 1403197 Heading C7F A suspension of colloidal like particles (0.001- 10Á) in a suspension liquid is treated with a metal compound capable of being reduced to a metal catalyst for electroless plating, said compound being in a solvent immiscible with said suspension liquid, the mixture being agitated until said particles are coated with said compound, and the coated particles are electroless plated. The particles may be glass, metal, minerals, organic or inorganic compounds, waxes, polymers, or inorganic/polymer mixtures; said catalytic metal may be Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, Ag or Au, suitable metal salts and suitable solvents therefor being listed. In an Example, 0.5-1.0Á particles of an acrylic polymer dispersed in a hydrocarbon mixture is mixed with 2 wt parts PdCl 2 in 200 parts water and agitated; the organic dispersion is separated from the water, and the treated particles electroless plated in a solution of 3.5% Co So 4 , 7.0% Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , 2.0% NaH 2 PO 2 and 15.0% NaK tartrate.
