Abstract

1402888 Stabilizing polymers CIBA-GEIGY AG 26 Sept 1973 [21 Oct 1972] 48600/72 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division C2] Stabilizers for polymeric material comprise the novel compounds of Formula I and salts thereof wherein m is 0 or 1; n is 1 or 2; R 1 and R 2 are the same or different and each is a straight- or branched chain alkyl residue having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms or R 1 and R 2 , together with the ring carbon atom to which they are bound, form a cycloalkyl group having from 5 to 12 carbon atoms; R 3 is hydrogen, a straight- or branched chain alkyl residue having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, an aralkyl residue having from 7 to 12 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl residue having 5 or 6 carbon atoms; A is -O- or wherein R 4 is hydrogen, a straight- or branched chain alkyl residue having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms and is either unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, cyano or hydroxyl groups or interrupted by one or more oxygen or sulphur atoms, an aralkyl residue having from 7 to 12 carbon atoms, an alkenyl residue having from 3 to 12 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl residue having from 5 to 12 carbon atoms; R 5 is hydrogen, a mono or divalent hydrocarbyl residue having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms and is either unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, cyano or hydroxyl groups or interrupted by one or more oxygen or sulphur atoms, or R 5 is a group having the Formula II wherein P is 0, 1 or 2, R 1 and R 2 have their previous significance and Y is hydrogen, a straight- or branched chain alkyl residue having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, an alkenyl or alkynyl residue each having from 3 to 12 carbon atoms, an aralkyl residue having from 7 to 12 carbon atoms or the group CH 2 CH(OH)R 8 wherein R 8 is hydrogen, a phenyl residue or an alkyl residue having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and when A is -O-, X is and when A is >N-R 4 , X is wherein q is 1 or 2 or when n is 1 and R 5 has the foregoing Formula II wherein p is 2, X can be an -SO 2 NH-, residue; with the provisos that when A is -O-, R 5 is not hydrogen and when A is >NR 4 , m is 1, n is 2 and X is then R 5 can be absent. Examples 19-28, 60-68 describe the stabilization of polypropylene, high density polyethylene, polystyrene and polyester based film forming polyurethane. Many other polymeric materials are specified.
