Abstract

1401833 Cable terminations MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 3 Oct 1972 [4 Oct 1971] 45628/72 Heading H2E A high voltage cable terminator comprises a porcelain insulator 42 with a cylindrical bore 44 and attached at one end to a resilient semiconductive boot 28 having a stress cone shape, thixotropic insulating grease 24 and grease retaining members 56, 58 adapted to engage around the conductor 14 insulation 16 of the cable 12. The boot is attached to the insulator by ridges 40 and an earthing clamp 43 to which the cable shield wires 22 are attached, the semiconductive shield 18 of the cable being gripped by grooves 38 of the boot. The retaining member 56 comprises an annular flange 64 engaged between the insulator 42 and the boot 28 and a frusto-conical portion with a wall 60 of narrowing thickness towards the taper and serves to retain grease within the bore 32 of the boot. The retaining member 58 has a cylindrical wall 66 with grooves (68, Fig. 4, not shown) on its outer surface and a coaxial conical wall 70; it is secured to the wall 44 by adhesive and the grooves 68 permit the escape of grease displaced by the cable during installation. A resilient cup 48 surrounded by a stainless steel cap 49 seals around the end of the insulator and a connector element 21 connected to the conductor 14 and held by a snap ring 50. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,318,606.
