Abstract
1401466 Filter and addition SEITZ-WERKE GmbH 10 Oct 1972 [11 Oct 1971] 46601/72 Heading B1D A system is provided for continuously adding varying quantities of two separate filter aids to a stream of beer flow from a storage tank 13 to a filter 10, one filter aid being for the removal of permanently present yeast sediment whilst the other is for the removal of albumen sediment which only deposits on cooling of the beer. The two filter aids are added by metering devices 23, 24 controlled by electric motors 29, 30 and provided with flowmeters 27, 28 to measure the amount of filter aid flowing per unit time in lines 25 and 26 and thus being added. A pair of turbidimeters 18 and 19 mounted in series in a bromie conduit 17 off the main fluid flow line 11 measure the amount of sediment. The first turbidimenter 18 measures the total amount of sediment (yeast plus albumen). The second turbidmeter has a heating zone 20 positioned upstream to re-dissolve the albumen. This turbidimeter thus measures only the amount of yeast sediment. A flow-meter 15 measures the total amount of beer flowing. The valve from the turbidimeter 19 is fed directly a, b, c, to a multiplication stage 37 where it is combined with the flowmeter value to give the amount of yeast sediment per unit time. This value is then compared in an actual-value comparison stage 39 with the amount of corresponding filter and being added by metering device 23 and as measured by flow meter 27 and the motor 29 and, hence, amount of filter aid being added is varied accordingly. The values from turbidimeter 19 is also led together with that from turbidimeter 18 to a subtraction stage 35 the product of which is a value corresponding to the amount of albumen sediment. This value is then treated similarly in a second multiplication stage 36 and actual-value comparison stage 38 to adjust the amount of filter aid being added by metering device 24. The filter aids added may be two different kieselguhrs.
