Abstract

1401368 Super-conductors; electromagnets NATIONAL AERONAUTICS & SPACE ADMINISTRATION 11 May 1973 [11 Aug 1972] 22506/73 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A twisted ribbon super-conductor comprises a flexible substrate 10 around which is formed at least one helical layer 22 of a super-conductive compound. As described, all surfaces of a niobium ribbon substrate are coated with a masking metal (copper or nickel) which is then selectively removed by photo-etching to expose helical paths. The substrate is heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at 200-500‹C to form a final mask of niobium oxide 20 in the helical paths. The remaining masking metal may now be removed and the substrate is subjected to a diffusion reaction to form layers 22 of niobium stannide. To effect this the substrate is dipped in molten tin, removed but held at high temperature, and then allowed to cool. If the intermediate mask is of copper it need not be removed before the treatment with molten tin: copper is not found in the final ribbon. When coating with copper, a first thin layer is vacuum deposited and then built up by electro-plating. In a modification, a plating resist mask is formed as the first step, and the intermediate mask is then applied by plating.
