Abstract

1400620 Centrifugal pumps SKF INDUSTRIAL TRADING & DEVELOPMENT CO BV 13 Nov 1972 [11 Nov 1971] 52387/72 Heading F1C An impeller and driving unit for the cooling water pump of an I.C. engine comprises a mounting structure for attachment to a casing, a rotatable assembly having an impeller disposed adjacent one side of the mounting structure and connected to a rotatable driving structure including a drive pulley, the pulley forming part of the rotatable assembly and being disposed adjacent the opposite side of the mounting structure, a rolling bearing for transmitting radial and thrust loads from the rotatable assembly to the mounting structure, and a seal between the rotatable assembly and the mounting structure, each part of the unit except the rolling elements of the bearing and the seal being permanently secured to an adjacent part of the unit. In Fig. 1, the pump impeller 4 is permanently secured to a hub 13 integral with a cogged driving pulley 11 and the inner race 9 of the ball bearing, the outer race 8 being permanently secured to a mounting structure 1 comprising an aluminium part 7 permanently attached to a thin wall 6 of pressed sheet metal, diecast aluminium or plastics material. A seal ring 5 is provided between the wall 6 and the hub 13. Apertures 14 communicate with atmosphere to facilitate cooling of the seal and bearing and to drain any leakage. In Fig. 2, the inner race 15 is permanently secured on a flange 16 of the mounting structure 1, while the outer race 17 is permanently secured to the inner circumference of the pulley 11. The impeller 4 has an integral stub shaft 21 which is permanently secured to the pulley hub. The seal ring 5 is provided between the mounting structure 1 and the impeller 4 or may be disposed radially inwardly of the inner race 15. The apertures 14 are in this case provided in the web 20 of the pulley.
