Abstract

1399833 Preservation of timber PROTIM & GALLWEY Ltd and ANDREW ENG (NOTTINGHAM) Ltd 19 July 1972 [19 April 1971] 10009/71 Heading ASE [Also in Division D1] Tributyl tin oxide, pentachlorophenol, gamma benzene hexachloride or dialdrin is used as a timber preservative by a method wherein the preservative is pumped from reservoir 1 into preservative container 2 to level L30. Vacuum pump 42 then applies vacuum to container 2 and timber container 3, and pump 43 transfers the preservative to the timber container 3 to level L31. Atmospheric pressure is then applied to containers 2 and 3 and the timber absorbs preservative (indicated by meter 41). Pump 43 then transfers remaining preservative back to container 2 so that the preservative level in container 3 falls to L2-L3 and this level is maintained automatically by pump 40. The preservative level in container 2 is about L50 at this stage and gauge 50 shows the amount of preservative in the timber. To obtained a desired preservative content in the timber, vacuum is applied again to draw preservative from the timber which is automatically pumped back into container 2 and is registered by gauge 50.
