Abstract

1399677 Moulding fibre reinforced resin YOUNGSTOWN SHEET & TUBE CO 22 Oct 1973 [20 Oct 1972] 49031/73 Heading B5A A glass fibre reinforced thermosetting resin article, is made by impregnating the fibres with the resin and subjecting it to radio frequency pre-heating as it is drawn through a die 16 which shields the electrodes 17, 18 of the preheater 15 from contact with the resin, and then heating the resin to the temperature required for gelling as it is drawn through a further electrically heated die 21. The pre-heater is preceded by a creel 10 containing spools 11 from which the fibres are drawn, via a carding plate 11a, through a resin impregnating bath 12 around guides 13 of which the fibres pass, and through a die 14 which removes excess resin. The die 16 may have an inlet end which is flared to remove excess resin; may be of a shape which is round or flat and may differ from that of the die 21; and preferably comprises polytetrafluoroethylene confined by ceramic intermediate the electrodes. The glass fibre may comprise rovings, woven cloth, or filaments, and may comprise 50 to 70% of volume of the impregnated fibre. The resin may comprise polyesters used with specified conventional peroxide catalysts, and a vinyl ester resin with 2% benzoyl peroxide is referred to as being pre-heated to 180‹ to 190‹ F.
