Abstract
1399639 Epoxidation process SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 11 Aug 1972 [13 Aug 1971] 37528/72 Heading C2C Olefinically unsaturated compounds are epoxidized with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst consisting of one or more fluorinated ketones and/or fluorinated ketone hydrates which have the following formulae respectively: RCX 2 -COCY 2 R<SP>1</SP> and RCX 2 C(OH 2 )CY 2 R<SP>1</SP> in which R and R<SP>1</SP> are hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, C 1 -C 10 alkyl, C 6 -C 10 aryl and X and Y are hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine, at least one X being fluorine and at least one Y being fluorine or chlorine. Preferred olefinically unsaturated compounds are those of Formula (a) in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen, C 1 - C 12 hydroxyhydrocarbyl, C 1 -C 12 hydrocarbyl free from acetylenic bonds with the proviso that two of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 may form a hydroxyhydrocarbylene chain which together with the carbon atom to which they are attached forms a carbocyclic ring of up to 12 members or of Formula I in which R is C 3 -C 8 alkenyl, n is 1-3 and R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, C 3 -C 8 alkenyl or C 3 -C 8 epoxy alkyl. Examples are given of the epoxidation of octene- 1, propylene, allyl alcohol, 2,6-diallyl phenol, trans - stilbene, 1,3 - butadiene, 1,5 - cyclooctadiene, vinyl cyclohexane and 2,6-diallyl phenyl glycidyl ether.
