Abstract

1399637 Cutting by fusion; grinding; welding by fusion DND CORP 7 Aug 1972 36845/72 Headings B3V B3D and B3R [Also in Division H5] A machine for performing an operation on a pipe 12, e.g. bevelling, cutting, drilling, grinding, polishing, welding, X-raying, comprises a tool support 152 connected to an openable ring assembly 20, 22 which is rotatable on a part annular frame 16 carrying self centring pipe clamping members 110, 112 which are movable along a rotatable screw member 76. In the embodiment described, the frame 16 is fixed by bolts 72 to a support frame 70 carrying a worm 76 which is in engagement with the pipe clamping members 110, 112. The worm 76 is rotatable by a motor or manually by an arm 132 to move the clamping members 110, 112 towards or away from each other along a guide bar 74. The ends of the worm 76 are received in bearings 86, 88 which are in screw threaded engagement with the frame 70 to permit fine lateral adjustment of the worm 76. Slidably mounted on the frame 16 is the ring assembly 20, 22 comprising a ring member 22 hinged to and releasably lockable by a bolt member 60 to a ring member 20 to enable the machine to be positioned on a pipe 12. The ring member 20 is connected by screws 156 to a tool support frame 152 which is attached to a bar 158 adjustably mounting a cutting torch 14. The ring assembly 20, 22 carrying the cutting torch 14 is rotatable around the frame 16 by engaging a groove 134, 136 in the ring assembly 20, 22 by a driving wheel 138 which is rotated by a motor or hand crank 150 via a transmission assembly 146 secured to the frame 70. One of the surfaces of the driving wheel 138 and the ring assembly 20, 22 may be knurled and the other of resilient material. The ring assembly 20, 22 may alternatively be rotated by a sprocket wheel (176) (Fig. 4, not shown) which engages chain members (164, 166) positioned in the grooves 134, 136.
