Abstract

1399535 Electric connectors PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 48979/72 Heading H2E A connector for electrically and mechanically interconnecting the ends of two or more support rails 10 carrying conductors 12, 22 comprises an insulating housing 1 with a plurality of mutually insulated metal plates 26, 27 connected to lead-through conductors 15 projecting beyond the housing and engaging the conductors, the lead-through conductors being embedded in a coupling member 6 of insulating material detachably secured to the housing. The housing 1 is formed as a rectangular box with a recess 4 in each sidewall, a central boss 5 in the bottom wall 2 and a cover 3. Each coupling member 6 has one lead-through conductor 15 for each conductor in a rail pivotally mounted for rotation about a respective aperture 35 in a widened end portion 7 of the member and urged outwardly by a spring (16). A rebate 8 enables the end portion 7 to be engaged in a recess 4 while the other end of the coupling member 6 is inserted into the end of a rail 10, a metal plate 18 screwed to the member 6 being clamped within slots 19 of the rail, a projecting portion 17 of each lead-through conductor 15 bearing against a respective conductor 12 or 22 against the resilience of the springs (16) and the end 21 of an earth strip (20) engaging an earth strip 20 in the rail. Each plate 26, 27 has four pin contacts which enter a respective hole 35 to engage a lead-through conductor and effect interconnection of like poled conductors 12, 22 in the tracks. The plates 26, 27 are separated by an insulating plate 28 and a further insulating plate 31 lies between the housing and the plate 26, all being contained within the cover and held by a screw 41 engaged by a sleeve 42 in the housing wall 2. A recess 4 not receiving a rail is closed by a cover 43. A metal earth plate 39 has holes 40 which engage pins (37) projecting from the earth strips 20.
