Abstract

1399486 Centrifugal separator COULTER ELECTRONICS INC 22 Sept 1972 [22 Oct 1971] 43943/72 Heading B2P A centrifuge for studying the sedimentation characteristics of whole blood comprises a centrifuge head 120 removably mounted on a driven shaft 154 for independent rotation thereabout, a drive motor 156 coupled to the shaft 154 for intermittently rotating said shaft, sample tube holders 136 carried by the head 120 in symmetrical fashion adjacent its periphery and adapted to receive substantially vertically arranged sample tubes 150 each containing a column of blood, and a gear 134 mounted fast on the shaft 154 and coupled, through pin and aperture means 142, 144, to the centrifuge head to rotate same intermittenly and, through meshing pinions 140, to the tube holders to rotate the latter, and hence the sample tubes 150, about their own axes in between the intermittent rotational cycles of the centrifuge head. The centrifuge head 120 consists of circular plates 126, 130 fixedly secured to a shaft 128 having a bore 128" for rotatably receiving the end of the driven shaft 154 and a depending extension 128' Which bears on a support 132 secured by a set screw 127 to the shaft 154. The gear 134 is mounted on a collar portion 192 of the support 132 and carries a pin 142 which engages in a circular slot 144 in the plate 126. The tube holders 136 are mounted on shafts 138 passing through openings in the plate 126 and carrying the pinions 140 which mesh with the gear 134. The drive motor 156 is reversible and may be connected to the shaft 154 directly or, as shown in dotted lines in Fig 2, via a belt drive 141. A timer 124 operating through switches 184, 186 and relays 184", 186" automatically controls the rotation of the centrifuge head through a sequence of four cycles, e.g. of 45 seconds duration (during which centrifugal force greater than gravity force is applied to the blood samples) and also controls the reversal of the motor 156 and rotation of the sample tubes 150 for 180‹ about their own axes between each cycle and application of centrifugal force. The pin and slot 142, 144 also serve to restrict the rotation of the sample tubes about their own axes to periodic during which the centrifuge head is at rest or begins its rotation.
