Abstract

1398929 Joining and forming sheet metal members, welding by pressure, working at specified temperatures BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 27 June 1973 [7 July 1972] 32050/72 Headings B3A B3R and B3V A method of joining and forming two sheet metal members 5, 6, one of which at least has superplastic characteristics and both of which are capable of being diffusion bonded together comprises holding a region of the two members together, heating to effect diffusion bonding of the region to form an enclosed area bounded by the region, if necessary heating the members to a temperature at which the sheet member or members having superplastic properties become superplastic, and pressurizing the enclosed area to effect superplastic deformation to a desired shape. The members 5, 6 are laid in a mould and the member 6 has apertures 6a which register with outlets 4a of ducts 4 formed in a flat lower part 2 of the mould, the member 5 having superplastic characteristics. Preferably the member 6 also has superplastic properties. The mould is heated and placed under pressure for diffusion bonding of the members 5, 6, which may have an interlayer, e.g. copper foil, where bonding is to take place. Preferably the bonding temperature is in the superplastic range of the member(s) to be deformed. For a Ti alloy containing 6% Al and 4% Va the temperature range for both diffusion bonding and superplasticity is 930-950‹ C. Inert gas is admitted to the ducts 4 and the member 5 assumes the contour of channels 3 thereby forming a stiffened panel.
