1398694 Magnetic induction accelerators TOMSKY ORDENA OKTYABRSKOI REVOLJUTSII I ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI POLITEKHNICHESKY INSTITUT IMENI S M KIROVA 26 Nov 1973 54800/73 Heading H1D A ketatron comprises an electromagnet with at least one magnetizing winding 8 (Fig. 1) and at least one air gap 2 which contains a toroidal vacuum accelerating chamber 1, and at least one bias winding 7 which, when energized, changes the field distribution within the air gap 2, the bias winding 7 being connected in series with the magnetizing winding 8 for energization together therewith, by a current pulse generator 9 in which an energy accumulator 10 is connected by way of switching elements 11, 12 to the windings 7, 8, and wherein switching elements 13, 14, whereby the energy stored by the electromagnet is returned to the accumulator 10 are connected to the magnetizing winding 8. The air gap 2 is formed between poles 4 of the magnet, the magnetic circuit being completed by a yoke 5 and a ferromagnetic insert 6. The winding 8 is divided and connected in series with bias winding 7, and is energized by a pulse generator 9 from condenser 10 via thyristors 11, 12. Energy is returned to condenser 10 by thyristors 13, 14. The pulse generator is so controlled that thyristors 11, 12 conduct and the bias and magnetic windings 7, 8 are connected initially in series across condenser 10. For a short time after condenser 10 is discharged, the flux in the air gap 2 is substantially constant. Then thyristors 13, 14 conduct and thyristors 11, 12 switch off during a brief interval, so that the energy stored in winding 8 flows back to condenser 10. At the same time there is a fall in flux in the air gap 2, causing the electrons circulating in chamber 1 to be displaced towards a target 15. A ketatron having two chambers 1 may function similarly.
