Abstract

1398679 Golf club CON-SOLE GOLF CORP 9 July 1973 [24 July 1972] 32570/73 Heading A6D A golf club head 12 of the "iron" type includes a shank 26 to which a shaft 28 can be secured, a substantially planar ball striking face 14 inclined upwardly and rearwardly from a front ground penetrating edge portion 16 to an uppermost rear portion, the major portion of the face 14 being rearward of a reference plane containing the axis of the shank 26 and extending generally parallel to the edge 16, a downwardly facing sole rearward of the edge 16, a back face extending between the sole and the top of the face 14, and a shallow concavity 20 in the major portion of the sole, the concavity 20 having a leading boundary 18 in close proximity to the edge 16 and a trailing boundary 22 the most rearward portion of which is at the lowest point of the head 12 when the reference plane is vertical and the edge 16 is generally horizontal. The back face of the head may be provided with a groove 38, the depth of which determines the weight of the head 12. The concave surface 20 of the sole can be any section of a quadric or conic surface of revolution provided that the longitudinal axis of the surface lies generally parallel to the edge 16. The club may be used as a sand wedge or a pitching wedge, the inclination of the face 14 being chosen to give the desired degree of loft.
