Abstract

1398463 Making rails; bending RAPENA PATENTUND VERWALTUNGS AG 11 Jan 1973 [19 Jan 1972 15 Dec 1972] 1575/73 Headings B3A and B3E A profiled rail is formed by bending a metal strip about a line 11, Fig. 1, where a sharp corner is to be formed, and upsetting the strip transversely at the line. Fig. 1 shows successive transverse sections of the strip at stations A-O as it passes through successive pairs of forming rolls. Sharp edges 28, 29 to a groove 17 are formed by successive roll passes at F and G shown in Figs. 7 and 8, whereby the metal in the groove walls is compressed transversely of the strip and forced into the configuration of Fig. 8. A closed hollow rail may be formed in this way and completed by welding adjacent edges, or may be formed by seaming a flat strip to the two end flanges of the section produced in Fig. 1, for which purpose the borders of the section and flat strip may first be roughened. Alternatively, adhesives or spot welding may be used. In further embodiments, two profiled rails are formed in adjacent roll lines, and secured together to form a closed hollow rail by folded welts or by welding. The welded seams may be upset. One of these machines may be driven through a slip clutch, so that its speed adjusts itself to that of the other. The strip may be put under tension during forming, by making successive rolls pairs of gradually increasing effective diameter, while driving them at the same speed. The rail may be made from aluminium or steel.
