Abstract

1398319 Spiral mandrel OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 25 Oct 1972 [2 Nov 1971 13 July 1972] 49268/72 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] Continuous tubing for pipes and tank shells may be formed on site by spraying, extruding, hand-laying or winding fibres and liquid resin upon a mandrel comprising a plurality of cylindrically arranged supports 10, 33, 34 and an endless strip 30 which is wound helically therearound to provide the forming surface and which is supported for movement longitudinally thereof to conrinuously feed the tubing off the mandrel. After finishing its working run at the support 34, the strip 30 travels along a downward helical path interiorly of the supports 10 to recommence its working run at the support 33. The strip 30 may be driven and supported axially of the mandrel by rollers 12 provided with grooves 40 or flanges (41, 42, Figs. 5, 7) for accommodating a strengthening flange 37 or rib (38, Fig. 6) on the strip The rollers 12 may be driven by a roller chain 23 passing around sprockets 20, 21 on each support and a radially adjustable tightening wheel (25, Fig. 4) mounted upon the shaft of variable drive hydraulic motor (26). The strip 30 is guided on its downward return run by rollers 36 adjustably mounted on struts 16 of the supports. The latter may be supported upon radial beams 18 having screws, slides or spaced holes for providing continuous or incremental radial adjustment of the supports. The beams 18 may be pivoted to (or detachably mounted upon a ring (19) to facilitate transportation of the mandrel. The supports 10, 33, 34 may be mounted on a stationary base or on a base rotating counter-clockwise to the strip 30. The mandrel may operate vertically or horizontally and may be provided with external or internal heaters (50, Fig. 3). The strip 30 may be of steel, may be corrugated (34, Fig. 7), may be strengthened by a longitudinal fold or by profile changes across its width and may have a tapered edge (48, Fig. 5).
