Abstract

1398262 Aerials EMI Ltd 31 July 1972 [5 Aug 1971] 36918/71 Heading H4A An aerial arrangement comprises a linear array of dipole elements formed on a planar substrate, the elements being disposed adjacent an edge of the substrate and each having component parts on both surfaces thereof. The arrangement also includes a planar or arcuate electrically conductive plate which is effectively corrugated and which is arranged with one edge adjacent and parallel to the edge of the substrate on which the elements are disposed. As described, each dipole of a co-linear array comprises one part 4, Fig. 1, which extends at right angles to a thickened end portion 6 of a strip conductor 2 on the front of a ceramic substrate 1, and a counterpart 5, on the back of the substrate, which extends from a projection, corresponding to the portion 6, from a ground plane 3. A printed circuit process may be used in forming the dipoles and other conductive members. Power is fed to or from the dipoles by power dividers consisting of matched T-junctions (Fig. 2, not shown). Control of the array pattern in a plane containing the array length (the elevation pattern) is achieved by unequally spacing the dipoles (Fig. 3, not shown). Control of the array pattern in a plane perpendicular to the array length (the azimuth pattern) is achieved by means of corrugated metallic sections 8, 9, Fig. 5, which extend away from the ceramic substrate 1 at an acute angle thereto. In another embodiment the corrugated metallic sections are cylindrically profiled instead of being flat (Fig. 6, not shown).
