Abstract

1398120 Linear electric motors INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd 13 Sept 1973 [16 Sept 1972] 43027/72 Heading H2A [Also in Division B6] A pin tractor includes at least one endless belt 19, 20 guided along a path having at least one linear portion. Magnetic elements 21 are carried by the belt(s) 19, 20 and a pattern of magnetic fields is generated by cores 11 with windings 12, which pattern is caused to stop along the path of the belt(s) 19, 20 so causing the elements 21 to move with it and thus driving the belt(s) 19, 20 and web 28 by means of pins 27. As shown the pins 27 are on the elements 21 which lie between belts 19, 20. A pair of cores 11 is associated with the top and bottom linear portions of the path. The windings 12 on each core 11 are comprised by three interlaced groups arranged such that each winding is flanked by coils of the other two groups. Initially two of these groups are energized to have the same polarity and the third group opposite polarity. Then the polarity of one of the two groups is reversed as is the polarity of the third. This causes the elements 21 to step by a distance equal to the centre to centre spacing of adjacent windings 12.
