Abstract

1397565 Ignition systems PLESSEY CO Ltd 10 Aug 1972 [17 Aug 1971] 38638/71 Heading F1B An internal-combustion engine ignition system comprises an HT voltage source 1, a storage capacitor 3, a diode 5 through which the capacitor 3 is charged by the source, a thyristor 8 responsive to a trigger pulse for discharging the capacitor through the primary winding 7 of a transformer thereby to produce in a secondary winding 13 of the transformer an ignition pulse, a pick-up coil 9 responsive to the passing in its vicinity of a magnet (not shown) attached to a part of the engine with which the system is associated for producing the trigger pulse and thus the ignition pulse, the ignition pulse being utilized to ionize a spark gap 14, and a further storage capacitor 4 and a further diode 6 through which the further storage capacitor is charged, the further storage capacitor being discharged across the spark gap when it ionizes thereby intensifying sparks produced in the spark gap. As shown the AT voltage source 1 comprises a magneto coil but the system may be fed by a battery. The magneto coil and the pick-up coil may be both arranged in association with the magnet. The pick-up coil may be wound on a separate pole-piece or may form part of the magneto coil. Specifications 1371042 and 1366859 are referred to.
