Abstract

1397538 Machining special articles GKN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 25 Aug 1972 [27 May 1971] 17410/71 Headings B3K and B3T In a method of machining the internal surface of open ended or closed annular members, such as the outer components of constant velocity joints a pair of workpiece components 14, 15 are mounted in a headstock 13 in spaced apart relationship on a common axis and a pair of cutting tools 18, 19 monnted on a common axis for rotation with sleeves 30 in their respective mountings 17 opposite each component. The tools and/or workpieces are rotated about their respective axes which may be coaxial or offset and the tools and or workpieces may be reciprocated along their axes of rotation simultaneously in opposite directions to effect the machining operation. In the embodiment described the workpiece components are rotated only on a common axis and the tools are rotated and axially reciprocated in opposite directions on a common axis offset from the axis of rotation of the components. The rotation of the tools and workpieces is effected from a shaft 23 through respective bevel gear drives 26 and 39 to ring gears 24 and 37 and the reciprocation of the tools is effected by a crank and connecting rod mechanism 34, 35 which displaces the sleeve 30 in its housing 31. The headstock 13 is mounted on a transversely displaceable slide 12 which is adjusted by screw 27 to adjust the offset between the component and tool axes and fluid pressure actuated cam means 40 is incorporated so that radial infeed of the cutting tools relative to the workpiece components is effected during operation up to the maximum as determined by the screw adjustment 27, 28. The machining of the component to its desired shape is determined by the number of teeth on the cutting tool and by the relative speed of rotation between the cutting tool and component and by the amount of offset between tool and component. The simultaneous reciprocation of the tools in opposite direction axially produces a substantial degree of dynamic balance during operation and hence reduction of vibration.
