Abstract

1397064 Rope fire escape W H FLOWERS 15 May 1972 [24 Feb 1971] 61369/70 Heading A5A [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] Apparatus for making a controlled descent of a rope or other flexible element in the event of fire in a building comprises a slide member 10 having a passage therethrough for flexible element 11 and formed with means 35 for attaching harness 15, the slide member being provided with means for exerting a frictional grip on 11, and the attachment means 35 being arranged such that, in use, the weight of the person in the harness biasses the slide member from the vertical so that a further firictional force is thereby exerted on 11. As shown in Fig 1 rope 11 is attachable by eyelet 12 to hook 13 permanently secured to building 14 adjacent a window or other opening. Harness 15 comprising adjustable waist strap 16 and seat strap 17 is attachable by hook 19 to flat metal lug 35 on slide member 10. The latter comprises, Fig 2, metal T-shaped body 20 formed with main and branch tubes 21, 22, main tube 21 having cylindrical bore 23 for the passage of rope 11, and branch tube 22 having a screw-threaded bore engaged by handle 24 with hand grip 25 at its outer end. Pressure member 27 in the form of a steel plug is mounted in the inner end of bore 26 in handle 24, and its inner face 28 is urged into contact with rope 11 by spring 29 acting on slidable tube 30. The outer end of spring 29 is engaged by screw-threaded plug 32 formed with head 34 for manual adjustment of the frictional force exerted on rope 11 by plug 27. Body 20 is also provided with lug 35 formed with circular holt 36 for engagement by hook 19 of harness 15, lug 35 being positioned so that the weight of a person in 15 inclines body 20 to the vertical in a modification an enlarged lug may be formed with further holes 36a, 36b providing alternative engagement points for people of different weights. To descend rope 11 the person pulls hand grips 25 downwardly until the angle of passage 23 to the vertical adjusts the applied frictional force on 11 to an acceptable rate of descent. In the Figure 4 modification a pair of friction pads replaces the single pressure member and handle 24 is dispensed with.
