1396783 Wrapping apparatus BELOIT CORP 8 May 1972 [14 June 1971] 21438/72 Heading B8C A wrapper is wrapped around' a roll 11 df paper supported by rotary drums 12 and those portions of the wrapper projecting beyond the ends of the roll 11 are folded by means of an apparatus comprising crimping paddles 16 rotated in a direction opposite to that of the roll 11 and carried by arms 17 telescopically mounted on carriages 15 adapted to travel along a cross beam 13. Each carriage 15 is guided along beam members 19 by rollers 29, 31 and has a motor 33 which drives pinions 23 engaging racks 22 mounted on the beam members 19, Each paddle 16 is rotated by a respective motor 111 and is carried on a cross-bar 49 secured to the arm 17. A first press wheel 106 for engaging the roll 11 is mounted coaxially with the paddle 16, and a second press wheel 119 is mounted for limited pivotal movement on the other end of the bar 49. The carriage 15 is connected to the top end of a piston (80, Fig. 4), received in a cylinder (73) secured at its lower end to a slide member (57, Fig. 5), guided for vertical movement with respect to the carriage 15 by rollers (69, 70) which engage tracks (66) in the carriage 15. The arm 17 is guided for vertical movement with respect to the slide (57) by rollers (61, 62) engaging tracks (62, 63) on the slide (57). A pair of chains (93) are connected at one end to the arm 17 and at the other end to the carriage 15, and pass over double sprockets (88) mounted on the slide 57. Thus, as the slide (57) is raised or lowered, the arm 17 is raised or lowered at twice the speed of the slide (57). When not in use, the carriages 15 are positioned centrally of the beam 13 adjacent stops 51, with the arms 17 retracted. For a wrapping operation, the arms 17 are lowered until arms 50 pivoted to the arms 17 and carrying rollers 137 engage the roll 11 and are pivoted, against the action of torque actuators 136. This operates a limit switch 56 to terminate downward movement of the arms 17 and initiate movement of the carriages 15 towards the ends of the beams 13. At the ends of the roll, the arms 50 are pivoted downwardly by the actuators 136 to recommence downward movement of the arms 17. The wheels 106, 119 engage the roll, to cause arms 127 carrying the wheels 119 to pivot upwardly and operate a switch 126 for the initiation of the crimping operation.
