Abstract
1396022 Cooling liquids by contact with gases BALTIMORE AIRCOIL CO Inc 18 Sept 1972 [23 Sept 1971] 43149/72 Heading F4K A liquid, after being cooled by evaporation in a first stage injector-type cooler is then passed through at least one similar stage or stages for further cooling, the temperature of the coolant gas at the subsequent stage or stages having a wet bulb temperature no higher than that utilized to cool the liquid in the first stage. In the apparatus shown ambient air is used as the coolant gas in each of the cooling stages. In the first stage, hot water to be cooled is pumped by a pump 16 to spray nozzles 19 thus inducing a flow of ambient air to the throat 11 and carrying the spray to the expansion, evaporation and cooling region 12. Cooled water collects in a sump 20 and the air stream passes through mist eliminators 13 to an outlet 14. From the sump 20 the partially cooled water is circulated by a pump 22 to a second and similar cooling stage from which the cooled water is discharged through a conduit 23. Two numerical examples are set out in the Specification.
