Abstract

139,541. Fairfax, H. W. M. Gabbett-. Dec. 10, 1918. Machine guns. - Consists in the combination with a recoiling barrel, which actuates a piston to compress air in a cylinder on recoil, of means for tapping the compressed air at any desired point in the recoil to open the breech; the breech closing and barrel return being effected either by springs or by compressed air. In the form illustrated, the barrel A is connected to a piston E working in a fixed cylinder H communicating through a non-return valve L with a telescopic tube M in which an air reservoir may be fitted. The tube M communicates through a slide-valve N with a cylinder 0 in which works a piston P urged forward by a spring P<1> and adapted to operate the breech mechanism, which is of the type described in Specification 138,135. In the position shown, the forward end of the actioncylinder 0 is open to the atmosphere via O<1>, N<3>, and N<1>. On recoil of the barrel, an arm V on a slidable rod T controlling the valve N strikes a fixed tread-down spring stop W, and displaces the valve relatively to the barrel to admit compressed air from the tube M to the cylinder, whereby the piston P is forced rearwardly, compressing spring P' and opening the breech. The barrel is returned by the spring Z<1> compressed during recoil. The piston P after opening the breech strikes an arm U on the rod T and displaces the valve N to exhaust, whereupon the spring P<1> returns the piston and closes the breech. A modification is described in which the spring P is dispensed with, a valve system being provided to admit compressed air to either end of the cylinder P to perform both the opening and the closing movements of the breech mechanism. It is further stated that by a suitable extension of the valve system, the barrel-return spring Z' may be dispensed with, and the return be effected by compressed air; the same result may be obtained by increasing the size of the cylinder O, and providing a stop to limit the rearward travel of the breech mechanism.
