Abstract

1395381 Adjustable back or arm rests for chairs PARNALL & SONS Ltd 26 July 1973 [18 Aug 1972] 38564/72 Heading A4J A backrest or armrest is mounted on one arm 11 of an L-shaped support 10 having its other arm 13 mounted for longitudinal displacement in a guide 14 formed in the rear underside of a seat pan 15 and moved along the guide by a roller 17 rotatable in bearings in the guide and in frictional engagement with the arm 13. The arm 13 may be held against displacement when the seat is occupied by pressure on the backrest or armrest which causes the inner portion of the arm 13 to be pressed against the edge 22 of the guide 14. Alternatively an L-shaped clamp 33 which is moveable into engagement with the arm 13 to prevent displacement thereof may be provided, the clamp being in threaded engagement with a shaft 30 which is coaxial with the shaft 18 to which the roller is secured. Shaft 18 is rotated by knob 19 and shaft 30 by knob 31. The roller 17 may be provided with grooves in which resilient O-rings 20 which form the acting periphery of the drive member are received.
