Abstract

1395027 Regulating CHANTIERS DE L' ATLANTIQUE 12 April 1972 [15 April 1971] 16949/72 Heading F1B [Also in Division G3] In a control method for one or several of the cylinders of an I.C. engine the law of motion is controlled of movable control members which act on all or part of the various means necessary for engine operation, or themselves constitute the means, through a control assembly including an electronic computer 9, Fig. 1 and receiving control instructions, an indication of the angular crankshaft position and information of the prevailing engine operating conditions. Detectors 5, 6, 7, 8, respectively responsive to diesel engine speed, load, blower speed and cylinder temperature feed signals to a control assembly 11 together with signals from a crank-shaft position reader 13 and the operator control transmission means 14. Within the control assembly 11 electronic computer 9 feeds signals to a control unit 10 which transmits electrical or fluid signals to actuating means for intake valves 16 3 , exhaust valves 17 3 , injection pumps 18 3 , and starting valves 19 3 , (for starting by compressed air). The actuating means may comprise a hydraulic or pneumatic actuator (21) Fig. 2 (not shown) supplied via a control element (22) from the control assembly 11 through the transmission path 15. In another embodiment the crank-shaft angular coder 25, Fig 3 position is sensed by optical readers 25b, 25c and the signal is fed to a wave shaper 25d, counting device 26, decoder 27 and logical mixer 28. The logical mixer 28 receives signals from a computer 24 and supplies a set of signals for operating a series of function generators 30 n . One of these 30, comprises an integrator I, a filter F and a clipper E which delivers a set signal to a comparator 32 which has an amplifying action and receives a valve position signal from detector 33. The comparator 32 corrects the valve position according to the set signal by a signal path 34 to a control element 22<SP>1</SP> e.g. an electro-hydraulic servo-valve which actuates the power element 21 e.g. a hydraulic actuator. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1277989.
