Abstract

1395008 Feeding webs ENGLISH CALICO Ltd 11 May 1972 [15 May 1971] 15146/71 Heading B8R Apparatus for sewing a web of textile material includes a sewing machine and a web take-up mechanism comprising a freely rotatable web supply roller and a web take-up roller 5 driven, e.g. via a clutch 13, by a drive means including an electric motor drivingly coupled to the sewing machine, means being provided for sensing the amount of web on the take-up roller 5 and effective, e.g. via the clutch 13, to alter the rate of web take-up accordingly. The sensing means comprises a roller 30 adapted to engage the web roll periphery and to operate, via linkage 32, 33, 35, 38 and cam 36, a clutch thrust collar 22 to gradually increase the friction between the clutch plates of the clutch 13 as the web roll diameter increases thereby counteracting, to some extent, the reduction in speed of the roller 5 as the web roll load increases and maintaining web tension substantially constant. The clutch plates have oil-soaked felt faces.
