Abstract

139,497. Pupin, M. I. Feb. 4, 1918, [Convention date]. Condenser telephones. - Sound - generating apparatus comprises an electric condenser in the form of a stiff cylinder 3, Fig. 1, mounted within a cylindrical shell 2 by insulating-plugs 4, and connected so as to receive variations of electric potential which cause the shell to vibrate with a frequency corresponding to the frequency of the electric variations. By controlling the electric variations telephonically or otherwise in accordance with speech or musical sounds, the device, or a series of them, may be used as a producer or reproducer of such sounds. The cylinder and shell are preferably made of steel and the space between filled with a dielectric such as compressed air. The shell may be designed so that its natural frequency of vibration coincides with that of the sounds to be produced: the electric circuit may also be tuned to the same frequency. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, 14 is an auxiliary condenser in parallel with the oscillator 2, 3, the two being kept charged to a suitable difference of potential by a direct-current source 15 adjustable by means of the resistance 16. The primary 13 of the transformer receives a high-frequency current. To direct the sound waves in the form of a parallel beam, the oscillator may be placed with its axis on the focal line of a cylindrical parabolic mirror.
