Abstract

1394808 Hydrostatic steering systems DEERE & CO 27 Dec 1973 [27 Dec 1972] 59741/73 Heading B7H A hydrostatic steering system comprises a main pump 10 supplying a steering unit 42 through a check valve 20 which, in opening, opens a second check valve 28 by means of a plunger (26), Fig. 3 (not shown), linking the valves, the unit 42 being connected to a cylinder 66 the piston-rod of which actuates steering mechanism, not shown. Should the main pump 10 fail, a pump included in the unit 42 and actuated by rotation of the steering wheel operates the cylinder 66 through lines 64, 68. First and second pressure relief valves 70, 72 connect the lines 64, 68 with a by-pass 86 to the return line 46 between the unit 42 and check valve 28. A pressure reservoir 92 is connected to line 46 through a choke 88. In the event of pump failure, the first and second valves 20, 28 close and the cylinder 66 is operated by the steering wheel. The volume of pressure medium displaced by the piston rod is transmitted into the reservoir 92 and returned from it to the opposite side of the piston. The relief valve 72 is provided to relieve excess pressure which may arise in the line 68 due to shocks to the steering wheels. A relief valve 100 ensures that even when the pump is inoperative with the valves 20 and 28 closed any excess pressure can be relieved to the reservoir.
