Abstract

1394145 Monitoring travel of vehicle SIEMENS AG 16 Aug 1973 [18 Aug 1972] 38858/73 Heading G1A The travel and speed of a vehicle is monitored by photo-electrically sensing rotation of a chopper disc, driven by the vehicle wheel, the disc comprising sections which affect the light reaching the detector to differing degrees but always providing a level of detector output. Thus in Fig. 1, the chopper disc 5 is of partially transparent material and is toothed or perforated. The light emitting diode is pulsed by generator 2 at high frequency and a filter capacitor 3 is provided in the phototransistor 7 output circuit and the generator input to prevent feedback to the latter. The signal delivered to high pass filter 8 comprises an A.C. signal modulated at high frequency in accordance with source 4 modulation, and changing, from a high amplitude level representative of direct light reaching the detector to a low level representing partially absorbed light, at the frequency dependent on the speed of rotation of the chopper disc, which is itself dependent on the speed of vehicle travel. The pulse shaper 10 delivers signals to travel measuring device 11 e.g. a counter and speed measuring device 12. If the chopper disc stops, the signal remains at the high or the low level of high frequency modulated signal. If the lamp, generator or connection L 1 , L 2 etc, fails, the signal level drops below a pre-set threshold in 9 and an alarm is actuated. Instead of filter 8 a transformer may be provided. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) the source is of constant intensity and the phototransistor forms part of a squarewave generator, including a trigger diode (and a charging capacitor) or alternatively a double base diode, which provides alternate higher and lower repetition rate pulse signals for the respective parts of the disc. A band pass filter 16 can pass both signals to alarm and measurement circuits as in Fig. 1. A reflective chopper disc having alternate sections of high and low reflectivities may alternatively be used. The detector may alternatively be a photo-resistor. Direction of movement may be indicated by having a further source and detector monitoring a different part of the disc path.
