Abstract

1393896 Optical reflectors; scanning; automatic control of oscillation VICKERS Ltd 10 July 1972 [22 July 1971] 34542/71 Headings G2J and G3R An optical deflecting device, which may be used to provide a scanning spot, comprises a stationary part 1 and a movable part 4, one of these parts carrying an electrical coil 3, the arrangement being such that the passage of a current through the coil, by interaction with the other part, moves the movable part in the direction of its winding axis X-X; the device also including an optical reflector 9, first and second flexure springs 7 and 8 whereby the reflector is coupled to the movable part and the stationary part, respectively, so that movement of the movable part produces rotational movement of the reflector other than about an axis perpendicular to the reflector, and a strain gauge carried by one of the flexure springs and connected in a control circuit for forming an electrical signal dependent upon the magnitude and direction of the displacement, which electrical signal can be employed as a negative feedback signal for controlling supply of the electric current. Stationary member 1, as shown, carries magnet 2 (which may be permanent or an electromagnet), the magnet preferably being formed with an annular recess to accommodate coil 3. To provide a repetitive scan, a sawtooth waveform current is applied to the coil. Strain gauges 11, 12 are used to produce electrical signals representing the actual displacement, and these signals applied as negative feedback to the energizing waveform. An electrical circuit is disclosed, Fig. 2 (not shown) to achieve this effect.
