Abstract

1393708 Automatically back-washing filter S G MOATTI 17 May 1972 [19 May 1971] 23154/72 Heading BID An apparatus for filtering fluids comprises a plurality of filter chambers which are continuously and successively cleaned by backflushing, wherein the back flushing of each chamber is initiated by the rotation of an obturator mounted on a central control rod driven by a fluid-motor which is powered by the pressure of filtered fluid. Figure 1 shows a filter having a lower filter chamber 11 containing a stack of disc-shaped gauze filter elements 1 each of which is divided into eight segment shaped filter chambers 2. Each filter chamber is fed via an inlet 4 from a central annular fluid inlet passageway 6 and delivers filtered fluid outwardly into collection chamber 12 from whence it is returned by outlet 13 to use. A central control rod 10 carries an obturator 7 which rotates within passageway 6 and successively closes the inlets 4 of the chambers 2 of each disc and hence causing backflushing by virtue of the pressure of filtered fluid in chamber 11. The flushing fluid leaves the chambers 2 by conduits 5 and is fed upwardly through the hollow centre of control rod 10 to an upper chamber 8 wherein it is filtered by inward flow through gauze 32 and passed away by conduit 33. The gauze 32 is periodically cleaned by a shock delivered by control rod 10 and springs 36. The control rod 10 is reciprocated by means of a piston 14 to alternate faces of which filtered fluid is successively applied. Obturator 11 is mounted around central rod 10 and has an internally helically grooved surface onto which a catch 16 on the rod engages. Movement of the rod in one vertical direction thus causes rotation of the obturator. A free-wheel mechanism 15 enables the rod itself to rotate on the return stroke so that the obturator is only rotated in one direction. Fluid is applied alternately to opposite sides of piston 14 by means of a reciprocal distributor slide 23 the position of which is changed by the piston 14 reaching each end of its stroke.
