Abstract

1393369 Liquid transfer expandable boom J D DUGGAN 16 Nov 1972 [16 Nov 1971] 53239/71 Heading B8E [Also in Division B7] An expandable boom for transferring liquid between ships or other relatively movable tanks comprises a linkage in zig-zag form in plan, Fig. 1, articulated or vertical axes on supporting frames 7 and normally urged to extend by tension on a cable 10 exerted by a winch 9. Crude oil pipes 3, Fig. 2, are connected by U-shaped pipes 4 secured to the frames 7 and fuel oil or other auxiliary pipes 5 are similarly joined by pipes 6 or these pipes may be replaced by tie bars 8. The boom can be retracted to its collapsed state, Fig. 3, by a winch 15 connected by a cable 16 to an anchorage at the pillar 14 at the remote end of the boom which in turn is supported by a jib 21 when connected to the ship 2. In a modification, Figs. 5, 6, the boom is mounted on a moored buoy 30, also provided with port and starboard mooring cables 43, 44 by rams 35 engaging a collar 34 on the first boom frame 7 to take up relative movement. To permit extension of the boom and mooring of the ship an additional cable 36 extends from a remotely controlled winch 37 joined to a float 39, Fig. 6, by a rope 38 which can be taken on a ship and drawn in with a ballclamp 41 then engaging a sleeve 42 to bring in the mooring cables 42, 43 which when secured allow the clamp 41 to be released so that further winching in engages another clamp 46 with an eye 47 on the pillar 14 to bring it in for connection to the ship. This boom is also retracted by a winch 15.
