Abstract

1393285 Magnetically operated friction clutch GKN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 25 July 1972 34703/72 Addition to 1296833 Headings F2C and F2L A vehicle multiplate friction clutch, in which a friction plate 18 is held between a presser plate 16 and a flywheel 12 to transmit drive, the clutch is engaged by a permanent magnet 35 and disengaged by energization of an electromagnet 45, which produces a flux opposing that of the permanent magnet 35. The winding of the electromagnet is designed so that the current which passes through it decreases as the flux level from the permanent magnet decreases due to temperature rise, the winding 45 here being of aluminium foil and the permanent magnet of a barium ferrite ceramic composition. The two magnets are in a housing 36, 37 fixed (adjustably) to the clutch housing 10, the flux path 21 through the clutch plates 14, 18 being defined by annular conductive portions 24, 26 and 28, 29) thereof separated by non- magnetically conductive portions (27, 30) thereof. An electronic circuit (Fig. 3, not shown), is provided wherein a variable resistor coupled to a clutch pedal controls the current through winding 45 and so regulates the engagement of the clutch, although this current may be controlled in relation to other parameters such as input or output speeds or the vehicle ignition system. The presser plate 14 and flywheel 12 are interconnected by flexible straps 15.
