Abstract

1393088 Pyridine IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 April 1972 [9 June 1971] 42337/74 Divided out of 1393086 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Pyridine is made by dehydrogenating piperidine in the presence of a catalyst made by impregnating silica gel with a solution, free from undissolved matter, of a palladium compound in acetic acid which is anhydrous or contains not more than 50 wt. per cent water, drying the impregnated silica gel and reducing the palladium to free metal. Preferably the dehydrogenation is performed by passing a mixture of piperidine vapour and hydrogen over the catalyst at 350‹ C. and atmospheric pressure.
