Abstract

1392918 Seismic energy generators M BURNSIDE (Texaco Development Corp) 17 May 1973 23505/73 Heading H4D A marine seismic source includes a flexiblewalled annular first chamber for receiving an expanding mass of gas to generate a desired initial pulse and a second chamber for receiving gas from the first chamber to suppress subsequent pulsations. Figs. 3 and 4, show a source before and after firing, respectively. In this embodiment the expanding gas is from an air gun 10c (but explosive or spark pulse generators could be used), and passes via ducts 14b into the first chamber, defined by annular region 15a between flexible wall 16a and the rigid wall of the cylindrical second chamber, 17d. Collapse of the first chamber under hydrostatic forces following the initial pulse causes the gas to be forced through apertures 18b into the second chamber which is permanently vented to atmosphere (or to a vacuum system), at 20b. Release of gas into the water, and consequent bubble pulsations, are thus avoided. A modified shape for the chambers is described (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown).
