Abstract

1392517 Mould clamping unit LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc 1 Aug 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 35966/72 Heading B5A A clamping unit for an injection or casting mould comprises fixed and movable platens 14, 18 supporting mould halves 10, 12 and interconnected by tie bars 20, and a clamping structure 22 connected to the movable platen 18 by a mechanism, e.g. ram 17 for displacing the platen to close the mould and slidably connected to the tie rods 20 by a piston and cylinder unit 28 for applying full clamping pressure to the platens, the piston 26 of each unit being in the form of a nut threaded on to a tie bar and rotatable for displacement of the clamping structure along the tie bars separately to and through a greater distance than the displacement by operation of the cylinder and piston units. Two guide bars 50, 52 are fixed to the movable platen 18 and slide through the clamping structure 22 as the ram 47 closes the mould. The platen is prevented from moving back by inserting blocking elements 53 (Fig. 7, not shown) in slots in clamping device 22 in the path of the guide bars 50, 52 or by gripping the guide bars by pairs of pivoted arms 80, 82 mounted on the clamping member and closed by a ram-operated toggle, Fig. 6, ram-operated cams (Fig. 5) or motor-driven double threaded screw (Fig. 4). The closed mould is clamped by fluid being fed to the R.H. chamber of each cylinder 28 to displace the clamping member and thereby the platen 18 with respect to the pistons 32 which are screwed on to the ends of tie bars 20. The pistons 20 are rotatable in unison by a chain 45 engaging sprockets 42 to adjust their position along the tie bars to accommodate different mould sizes. An ejector plate 94 is mounted on guide bars 50, 52 and carries ejector pins which enter mould half 12 on mould opening. The stationary platen may be positioned between the clamping structure and the fixed platen, the mould being clamped by tension applied to tie rods extending through the fixed platen.
