Abstract
1391886 Vehicle test stand: measuring torque electrically BROWN BOVERI & CIE AG 10 Aug 1973 [12 Aug 1972] 38047/73 Headings G1N and G1W A vehicle test stand comprises a hollow shaft 3, a cylinder 17 supported by bearings on the shaft 3, a pair of drums mounted on the cylinder 17, an induction motor consisting of a stator 8 and a rotor 7 fixed respectively to the shaft 3 and cylinder 17, an adjustable frequency changer for supplying power to the stator 8, and means for measuring the torque on the stator 8. In Fig.1 the shaft 3 is mounted in bearings 41, 42, and an arm 5 rigid with the shaft bears on a load cell 6 to measure the torque on the stator. In an alternative embodiment Fig.2 (not shown), the shaft 3 is clamped against rotation and carries strain gauges. The induction motor may be a three phase motor and the rotor may be a squirrel cage. The speed of the rotor 7 may be measured by a tachometer 12 which supplies a signal to a computer which adjusts the output of the frequency changer to produce a torque corresponding to the simulated vehicle speed, the measured torque signal being also supplied to the computer. A blower 10 is provided to cool the induction motor. The induction motor may be driven by or may drive the wheels.
