Abstract

1391718 Casting concrete railway sleepers CONCRETE INDUSTRIES (MONIER) Ltd 11 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 46762/72 Heading B5A Concrete railway sleepers are formed by supporting reinforcing wires 15 upon spacers (17, 19, 20, Figs. 1, 2 not shown) placed between the ends of adjacent multi-cavity moulds 12 aligned end to end, stressing the wires 15 using hydraulic pistons (14, Fig. 1) positioned at one end of the line of moulds 12, casting concrete (42, Fig. 2) around the wires 15, removing the spacers (17, 19, 20) and cutting the wires 15 between adjacent moulds 12 so that not more than 5 mm. of each reinforcing wire 15 projects outwardly from any of the sleepers. The spacers comprise vertically spaced channel shaped members (19) or bars (17) flanked on either side by plates (20) provided with vertical slots (21, Fig. 1) to define a grid for the wires 15. The cutter may comprise an abrasive disc saw 26 driven by a motor 35 and mounted on a head 34 moved across the line of moulds 12 by a handwheel 39 and chain 40. The head 34 is mounted on a frame 33 carried by a frame 28 provided with wheels 29 for movement on rails 24 along the line of moulds 12. The latter may be filled from a hopper (43, Fig. 2) provided with vibrators (44) and movable along the line of the moulds on the rails 24. The concrete may be steam heated after being deposited in the moulds 12.
