Abstract

1391032 Separating oil and water TEXACO Ltd 25 Jan 1973 3770/73 Heading BID A floating liquid layer is separated from the surface of a supporting liquid, e.g. oil from water. Contaminated water in pond 10, which may be a surge pond of an oil refinery, is held to a fixed level within the pond by means of a weir-type outlet barrier 13 mounted across outlet passage 26 of the pond. A separating apparatus 17 mounted in the outlet passage comprises an open or closed housing 19 which extends completely across passage 26 but which is mounted above the bottom of the passage to provide a channel 20 for water to flow out of the pond. The upstream end of housing 19 comprises an inlet for the contaminated surface layer of water. The inlet is formed by a short upstream wall 18 which ends below the water surface and which carries a pivotable weir 29 over which the oil contaminating layer spills. The angle of the weir is controlled by arm 36 and linked sensor 41 to keep a predetermined level of separated oil in the housing. The oil is removed by line 46 and pump 49 after being filtered through screen 24.
