Abstract

1390340 Mixing apparatus TEC GROUP Inc 31 July 1973 [14 Aug 1972] 36466/73 Heading B1C [Also in Division F1] Additive, such as solid particulate matter, a gas or a liquid, is supplied to a material, such as sludge or liquid, being propelled rotation (e.g. pressure or, as shown impeller blades 14, through outlets 64 in blunt downstream trailing edges 60 of the blades, said blunt edges engendering low pressure regions and hence suction behind the blades so that additive is drawn, from an additive supply source in a surrounding annular chamber 38, through valves opening in response to rotor rotation (e.g. pressure or, as shown impeller speed). As shown, an axial flow pump, which may be single or multi-stage, comprises, in each stage, a cylindrical impeller rotor 12 having three integral inwardly directed impeller blades 14. The rotor 12 is journalled in a housing 18 and driven, e.g. from a motor not shown, through gearing 20, 22. A seal is formed between the rotor and the housing by mating of a ring 40, releasably secured on the rotor by pins 46 and a retaining ring 48, and rings 50, 52 secured to the housing. Additive is collected from the housing chamber 38 by a scoop-vaned ring 84 and directed through a peripheral groove 88 and ports 78 in the ring 40, valves 80 and the outlets 64. Each valve comprises a ball 80 centrifugally released from a seat in opposition to a force of a spring 82. Alternatively, the valve may be controlled by a centrifugal switch. The housing chamber 38 may be charged through a conduit 92. For Figure see next column
