Abstract

1390303 Stress limiting devices; catch gear COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 10 July 1973 [10 July 1972] 32884/73 Headings B8L and B8B [Also in Divisions F2 and G6] A safety brake for a carriage 13 conveying fuel assemblies in a nuclear reactor comprises a brake body 15 slideable under control of a hauling chain 29 along a guide slope 16, and supporting the carriage 13 therebelow, the body 15 pivotally mounting cams 50, 51, which upon breakage of the chain 29, rotate to either wedge against the guide slope 16, or engage a discontinuity 34 therein, to arrest the body 15. Each of the cams 50, 51 includes a toothed section in mesh with a toothed rack 49 on a slide 41 slideably mounted within the body 15, the chain 29 being attached to the upper end of the slide which is biased by a spring 45 against the chain pulling force. Upon slackness in the chain 29, the slide 41 moves under spring action causing rotation of the cams 50, 51. The cam profile includes a stop 59, engageable with a stop 60 on the body 15 to limit cam rotation, a progressive spiral to wedge against the slope sides, and an abutment to engage said discontinuity 34. The carriage 13 is suspended from the brake body 15 by stirrups 14 each comprising two oblong rings which are plasticially deformable to absorb kinetic energy of the carriage when the body 15 is stopped.
