Abstract

1390240 Laminates of cellulosic foam and fabrics NYLONGE CORP 7 April 1972 16144/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] A water-absorbent product comprises a three-dimensional reticulated regenerated cellulose bonded fibre matrix, obtained by regenerating a foamed viscose having staple reinforcing fibres distributed therethrough, having at least one fibrous layer anchored in the face of the matrix. The matrix is preferably sandwiched between two fibrous layers. The product is made by depositing a foamed viscose whose alkalinity corresponds to a NaOH: dissolved cellulose ratio exceeding 0À9 (i.e. is greater than normal), on to a fibrous layer, depositing a second fibrous layer if required, and regenerating the cellulose. The matrix may contain at least 15 wt. per cent regenerated cellulose, and the dry product preferably contains 15-95 wt. per cent regenerated cellulose. The reinforcement fibres may be cellulose pulp fibres of length 1À5-4 mm. The fibrous layer may be a randomly oriented web or fleece of cotton or rayon or, less preferably, nylon, polyester or polyolefin, or may be a knitted, woven, mesh or open-pore fabric whose fibres are bonded at the points of intersection, cotton scrim and nylon netting being exemplified. The fibres of the outer layer(s) may be at least 10 mm. in length. The coating of each individual fibre preferably does not exceed 0À005 inch, The fibrous layer(s) preferably constitute 2-85 wt. per cent of the dry product with at least 20 wt. per cent of the total fibrous layers being embedded. In a preferred method of making the product, a first fibrous layer is deposited on a perforated belt or screen, the faomed viscose is deposited thereon and a second fibrous layer is deposited on the foam. The assembly is then compressed by belts or rollers and is coagulated, regenerated, washed, bleached and dried.
