Abstract
1390174 Junction boxes THOMAS & BETTS CORP 21 Feb 1973 [21 March 1972] 8503/73 Heading H2E An electrical junction box made of insulating material comprises a base member 22 having inward ribs 52, 54 defining a recess 56, hinged at a portion 59 to a planar member 24 bearing contacts 90 disposed to engage in the recess 56. Each contact 90 has an upstanding arm 92 with slots 98, 100 bounded by sharp edges for piercing the insulation of a conductor 80, 82, 84 or 86 of a first cable 30 and thereby making contact, and resilient arms 108 biased against the planar member 24 for contacting a spade terminal 116, 118, 120 or 122 attached to a second cable 28. The piercing of the insulation on the conductors of the first cable 30 is assisted by folding the planar member 24 into engagement with the base member 22, causing the ribs 52, 54 to press the conductors into the slots 98 or 100. The planar member 24 is then fastened to the base member 22 by a latch 114 which engages a latch button 112. Strain relief for the first cable 30 is provided by posts 88, and by recesses 93 into which the ends of the conductors are introduced after passing over the upstanding arms 92 of the contacts 90. A dust cover 26, hinged to the base member 22 at the end opposite the planar member 24, is fastened by a latch engageable in a receiver portion 42. The junction box may be mounted by an adhesive layer applied to the underside of the base member 22 or by holes 38 therein.
