Abstract
1390156 Rotary positive displacement machines G TITT 31 July 1973 [1 Aug 1972] 36390/73 Heading F 1F A rotary piston I. C. engine comprises two rotors 3, 12, 90 degrees out of phase on a common shaft 19, each rotor having at least two pistons 1, 2 and 9, 11 each with surfaces 1a, 1b sealingly engaging housing surfaces 4a, 4b, a rotary sealing member 5, 72 being in sealing contact with each rotor to define working chambers and having a cutout 70 for receiving the rotor pistons, the cut-out edges sealingly engaging the piston faces 1c, 1d, and passages 37, 38 controlled by valves 39, 40, Fig. 5, connecting the working chambers defined by the pistons so that air compressed by the pistons of one rotor is transferred to the working chambers of the other rotor for an expansion phase, fuel being supplied by injectors 43, 44 in passages 37, 38. The pistons draw air from inlet 7 and exhaust is effected through outlet 10. Sealing rotors 5, 72 may be rotated at twice the speed of rotors 3, 12 by gears 20, 21, as shown, or may have two cut-outs and be driven at the same speed. The sealing and piston rotors have liquid coolant circulated through their interiors via passages in the rotor hubs and shafts, Fig. 3, coolant pick-up pipes 17, 18 rotating with shaft 19 in the coolantfilled housing. Labyrinth seals are provided on the rotors.
