Abstract
1389969 Boots &c L N GODLEY J S KAMBORIAN JNR and M M BECKA 20 Nov 1973 [22 Jan 1973] 53792/73 Heading A3B [Also in Division B2] Adhesive is applied to the angles between the upstanding lasting margins 292 of the upper and the insole of a bottom-upward shoe asembly, which has been lasted at one end, at least, on a last 280, by a pair of nozzles 148 which are yieldingly urged downwardly and outwardly (by pneumatic rams) into the angles intermediate the ends of the shoe assembly, are moved forwards to the lasted portion and then moved rearwardly again, while cement is extruded and the yieldable forces are maintained on the nozzles, to a desired location and then the nozzles are moved inwardly and raised. Each nozzle is pivotable about perpendicular pivots 140 and 134 relative to a block 120 pivoted on a vertical post 122 of a carriage 20 slidable on two horizontal rails 16 supported from a frame 10 of a cementing machine which is disposed adjacent a lasting machine (Fig. 2A, not shown) as described in Specification 1378631. Thermoplastic granules from a hopper 92 (Fig. 7) are melted in a heated chamber 94 to form adhesive which is forced from a chamber 102A through passages 152 in the pivots and nozzle support cams 142. In operation, from the rest position in Fig. 1 a manual valve is actuated to extend a pneumatic cylinder 22 to move the carriage 20 forwardly - to the left in Fig. 1 - until the nozzles 148 are over the widest part of the insole indicated by a slidable valve actuating rod 50 below the carriage engaging a pivoted lug 88 (Fig. 5), the longitudinal position of which is controlled by a pivoted arm 66 on the frame engaging a selected notch 62 of a rail 60 on which the lug 88 is mounted. A valve 46, actuated by the rod 50, supplies air to contract two motors 182 to lower the nozzles 148 onto the insole and also contracts a motor 170 to move the nozzles outwards into the angles as in Fig. 16. The supply of air to motors 130 is also cut off so that the block 120 and the nozzles may pivot about the post 122 to follow the edges of the insole and, after a delay, the motor 78 is extended to lift the lug 88 from the rod 50 permitting the cylinder to extend further and move the carriage 20 until a selected stop knob 210 (Fig. 5) is engaged by a valve actuating bar 216. This supplies air through a pressure regulator to cause the plunger 106 to move at a controlled speed to force cement to and through the nozzles 148 and contracts the cylinder 22 to move the carriage and nozzles rearwardly until a cam surface 268 on the carriage 20 engages a stop surface 257 which was raised from a retracted position when the rod 50 engaged the lug 88. The linear position of the stop 257 is adjusted for different shoe heel positions by a knob 22 which rotates a shaft 220 (Fig. 2), and through a chain 228 a threaded rod 230 to stop the carriage, raise the extender plunger 106, and raise and move inwards the nozzles. The lug 88 and the stop 257 are lowered permitting the carriage to move rearwards for removal of the shoe assembly after the tops of the lasting straps 290 have been lowered to wipe the side margins and bond them to the insole and then been disengaged from the shoe assembly.
