Abstract

1389870 Brine treatment IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Aug 1973 [22 Aug 1972] 39093/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] Alkali metal choride (e.g. KC1) brine is prepared for electrolysis by adding thereto at least 25 p.p.m. of ferric iron, e.g. as ferric chloride; and alkali metal hydroxide to establish a pH of about 11, and removing precipitated material from the brine. After adjusting the pH but before removal of the precipitate, barium chloride and alkali metal carbonate may be added to lower the sulphate and calcium content of the brine.
