Abstract

1389797 Electromagnets BROWN BOVERI & CIE AG 23 Aug 1973 [23 Aug 1972] 40078/73 Heading HIP A linear electromagnetic actuator (Fig. 1) comprises a movable rod 1 sliding in plastic bearings 51, 52 recessed into limbs 41, 42 of non- magnetic U-frame 4. The rod also loosely fits a bore 23 of an armature 2 retained centrally by coil springs 61, 62 positioned on the rod between rectangular plastic washers 71, 72; 81, 82. Springs 91, 92 recessed in side members of the U- frame retain bearings 51, 52 against the rod 1, and lugs 10 (Fig. 2) conjoin the limbs 41, 42 of the frame, while carrying stop abutments 101 locating the armature in mid position. Two electromagnets 31, 32 are carried by limbs 41, 42 to displace the armature in either sense. In operation excitation of either electromagnet exerts force on the free end of the armature and tilts it against the appropriate spring to grip rod 1 in bore 23, and a resolved force along the rod axis (Fig. 3, not shown) displaces the rod relatively to bearings 51, 52 in an appropriate direction against their friction the resistance of the member to be actuated, and the resistance of the respective spring. On de-energization the translational force is removed and the armature is repositioned into its mid position by the springs, while rod 1 is left retained by bearing friction in its displaced position. The operation is repeatable by further energization of the appropriate electromagnet. The device is applicable to control system adjusters, ventilator or valves.
