Abstract
1389408 Monitoring I C engines B P TANKER CO Ltd 25 Oct 1972 [27 July 1971] 35237/71 Heading G1N The performance of compression ignition or other fuel injection I.C. engines is recorded and/or monitored by sensing pressure changes in the fuel supply pipe or fuel pump associated with the engine and the pressure changes in the engine cylinder or cylinders by means of pressure sensitive elements which convert the pressure changes into electrical signals in an electrical circuit, and correlating the pressure change signals at piston top dead centre by means of display on a recording device connected to the circuit. As shown, pressure changes in the fuel supply line 3 are detected by Piezo-electric crystal devices, strain gauges, inductive, capacitive or differential transformers, or semi-conductor devices 1 connected to detect changes in dimension of the line, the devices being connected to the circuit shown in Fig.3 which suppresses noise and adds the signals from the devices 1. Pressure changes in each engine cylinder are detected by connecting a thin walled tube 13 to the cylinder and detecting changes in dimensions of the tube by devices 11. A joint oscilloscope 10 is used to correlate the signals at top dead centre. (For Figure see next page)
